Original press release (11/02/22):

We are excited to announce that the Glen Luss Glasgow Rocks have submitted a proposal that, if successful, would result in us having our own home in Easterhouse right next to the Glasgow Fort shopping centre just off the M8.

The current external view of the building

It is an existing sports centre that would need to be modified to include event seating and expanded to fit the purposes and needs of the team and the community plans we have.

The plans currently encompass a full-size arena and court, sports bar/cafe, gym, studio space, club shop as well as the team’s offices.

The facility will remain open throughout the week for the public to book court space, event space and utilise the gym.

We have already received fantastic support from our current sponsors including education partners University of the West of Scotland and Kelvin College the latter of whom have a campus in Easterhouse.

Over the last few months we have been in consultation with local community groups, potential neighbours and local housing associations who have offered their support for the move.

We are looking to upgrade the facility and move in early next season should the bid be successful.

Duncan Smillie, Rocks owner said:

“WE NEED TO FIND OUR OWN VENUE IF WE WISH TO SURVIVE AND THRIVE AS A COMPETITIVE PROFESSIONAL BASKETBALL FRANCHISE, THIS IS SINGULARLY THE MOST IMPORTANT ISSUE FOR THE ROCKS GOING FORWARD, WITHOUT IT THERE WILL BE NO GLASGOW ROCKS.

“WE HAVE HAD APPROACHES FROM OTHER TOWNS AND CITIES IN SCOTLAND TO RELOCATE THE FRANCHISE BUT OUR HEART IS IN GLASGOW AND THAT IS WHERE WE WOULD PREFER TO REMAIN. THE OPPORTUNITY AT EASTERHOUSE IS A VERY EXCITING ONE INDEED.

“WHILST THE VENUE IS NOT AS BIG AS WE WOULD HOPE FOR ON DAY ONE, THE FACILITY IN EASTERHOUSE WORKS IN EVERY OTHER WAY. IT WOULD BE OUR DESIRE TO IMMEDIATELY EXPLORE EXPANSION OPTIONS SHOULD WE BE SUCCESSFUL WITH OUR PROPOSAL.

“WE ARE SCOTLAND’S ONLY PROFESSIONAL MENS BASKETBALL TEAM COMPETING IN A BRITISH LEAGUE. WE WANT TO FLY THE FLAG FOR SCOTLAND AND GLASGOW AND WE HOPE TO DO THAT FROM OUR NEW HOME IN EASTERHOUSE.”

Rocks General Manager Sean Skelly stated:

“THIS WOULD COMPLETELY REVOLUTIONISE THE CLUB.

“AT THE MOMENT WE COMPETE FOR EVENT SPACE WITH MANY OTHER SPORTS AND HAVING OUR OWN VENUE ALLOWS US THE FLEXIBILITY TO SCHEDULE OUR OWN FIXTURES AND TRAINING TO SUIT.

“BEYOND BBL FIXTURES WE WILL BE ABLE TO HOLD REVENUE GENERATING EVENTS BOTH FROM THE CLUB ITSELF AND ACROSS OTHER SPORTS.

“NEWCASTLE AND LEICESTER HAVE ALREADY SHOWN THE IMPACT AND SUCCESS THAT BEING IN CONTROL OF YOUR OWN FACILITY CAN BRING. THIS IS A GREAT CHANCE TO CREATE A REAL HOME FOR BASKETBALL CULTURE IN THE CITY.

“THERE IS A MOVEMENT ACROSS THE LEAGUE WITH OTHER TEAMS MOVING TO SECURE THEIR OWN FACILITIES AND THERE IS A REAL CHANCE ROCKS, AND THEREFORE, SCOTTISH PROFESSIONAL BASKETBALL COULD BE LEFT BEHIND IF THIS DOES NOT GO AHEAD.

“IF IT DOES IT COULD SECURE ROCKS AS A COMPETITIVE FORCE FOR MANY YEARS TO COME.”

Rocks community development officer Billy Singh focused on the benefits Rocks could bring to the local community:

“OUR VISION IS THAT THE ARENA WILL BE A REAL COMMUNITY ASSET FOR ALL EASTERHOUSE RESIDENTS. WE ARE TRULY COMMITTED TO WORKING WITH THE PEOPLE OF EASTERHOUSE AND ALL THE RELEVANT AGENCIES / ORGANISATIONS THAT ARE ACTIVE IN THE AREA.

“WE HAVE ALREADY SPOKEN TO MANY LOCAL GROUPS/HOUSING ASSOCIATIONS AND RESIDENTS AND SHARED OUR THOUGHTS BUT JUST AS IMPORTANT, WE LISTENED TO THEIR ASPIRATIONS FOR THE ARENA.

“COLLECTIVELY WE WILL AIM TO IMPROVE THE PHYSICAL, MENTAL AND SOCIAL WELLBEING OF EVERYONE WE ENGAGE WITH. THERE WILL BE EMPLOYMENT/VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES, ACCREDITED TRAINING PROGRAMMES IN SPORT, VISITS TO LOCAL SCHOOLS, BASKETBALL CAMPS FOR ALL AGES, FITNESS SESSIONS FOR ALL ABILITIES AND SCHOOL HOLIDAY PROGRAMMES.

“OUR MORE MATURE RESIDENTS WILL NOT BE FORGOTTEN WITH BODY-BOOSTING BINGO AND WALKING BASKETBALL AVAILABLE. IT WILL TRULY BE A PLACE EVERYONE WILL BENEFIT FROM”

Rocks business development manager Michail Mavroudis spoke on the benefits to local businesses:

“WE ARE VERY EXCITED FOR WHAT MOVING TO EASTERHOUSE CAN BRING TO THE AREA, THE TEAM AND OUR FANS.

“THE FOOTFALL WE WILL BRING TO THE AREA WILL BENEFIT LOCAL BUSINESSES AND WE ALREADY BRING A FANTASTIC PORTFOLIO OF SPONSORS AND PARTNERS WHO WILL WANT TO WORK IN THE AREA.

“WE HAVE ALREADY ENGAGED WITH THE FORT AND THE LOCHS SHOPPING CENTRE WHO ARE TWO OF THE MAIN SHOPPING AREAS IN THE LOCAL AREA AND ARE REACHING OUT TO ALL OF THE LOCAL STORES AND BUSINESSSES.”

We will keep all the Rocks fans up to date with any news as the proposal develops. If you are as excited with the news as we are and want to support the club in this cause we would ask that you write to your local MSP or councilor showing your support. Every little helps and you could make the difference.

If you have any questions please message us at info@glasgowrocks.co.uk.

Thank you and Go Rocks!
