Rocks secure place in next round of the BBL Trophy

Rocks took the 81-72 win at home on Friday night when they defeated Worcester Wolves in the first round of the BBL Trophy.

Rocks were slow to find their footing in the first quarter as a quick 7 points by Wolves’ Adam Thoseby allowed them to pull out to an early 13-9 lead. This was short-lived however as Gareth Murray replied with 8 points of his own to give Rocks a 5-point lead at the end of the quarter.

Rocks pulled away in the second, at one point going up by 12 points but Wolves’ Deshawn Freeman pulled his team back as Rocks went scoreless. This was capped off with a buzzer-beating three-pointer by Wolves’ Darrell Combs to trim Rocks lead to just 1 as both teams went to the locker room.

It was another shaky start in the third for Rocks as despite some early points on the board by Ali Fraser, poor defence allowed Combs to score 6 points to put Wolves up 47-51. However, on the back of some big shots by Gareth Murray and Tadas Rinkunas Rocks managed to claw their way back to give themselves a 1-point lead heading into the final quarter.

The fourth quarter was tight throughout as both teams fought for their place in the next round of the Trophy. A big turning point was when Wolves’ top scorer with 15 points Deshawn Freeman received his 5th foul forcing him to leave the game. With 5 minutes left, Rinkunas came up big once again, scoring two consecutive threes to give Rocks a 7-point lead. Gareth Murray and Ali Fraser then finished off the Wolves with some shots inside the paint to give Rocks the 81-72 win at home.

Ali Fraser finished the game as Rocks top scorer with 22 points. Gareth Murray added 14 while Tadas Rinkunas also added 13 off the bench.

Rocks now look ahead to next weekend when they face Sheffield Sharks on the 28th of December in the main hall at the Emirates Arena.
