Rocks squash the Giants in the BBL Cup Semi-Final

In both teams’ first matchup of the season, Rocks defeated Giants 85-77 in the first leg of the BBL Cup semi-final.

In a low scoring first quarter Rocks went back and forth with the Giants. Kieron Achara would get in on the action early as he knocked down a stepback three to open the scoring. Rocks would lead for the majority of the first quarter before Giant’s Mike McCall Jr knocked down a three-pointer to give the home side a 10-point lead. This would be short lived however as Ali Fraser received a feed from Jonny Bunyan for a two inside just before the buzzer expired.

Rocks began to widen the gap in the second as they knocked down 27 points in the quarter. Giants’ star player Willie Clayton got into foul trouble freeing up space inside for Ali Fraser and Achara to go to work. With 1 minute left in the half Rocks pulled away from the home side, outscoring them 10-2 to give Rocks a 40-32 lead at the half.

Bouna Ndiaye would open the scoring in the third with a dunk inside the paint and would then go on to 7 more points in the quarter. As the Rocks went into the final quarter still in control 54-60.

Giants brought it back to a 2-point game midway through the fourth quarter as Willie Clayton went to the line to sink his free-throws. Rocks would see the game out down the stretch however, as Giants failed to sink their shots down the stretch and Rocks capitalised. Kieron Achara would make his way inside for the And-1 to put Rocks up by 8 and then Greg Pryor and Bouna would work in tandem to ice the game for the Rocks 85-77.

Bouna Ndiaye and Kieron Achara would lead the way in this game, scoring 24 and 22 points respectively.
