Sharks snap Rocks unbeaten streak

Rocks couldn’t hold onto their unbeaten streak on Wednesday night when they narrowly lost 65-63 to the Sheffield Sharks on the road in Sheffield.

Rocks started off strong in the first quarter as they battled with the Sharks for an early lead. With the game tied at 7 a-piece, Rocks went on 15-7 run to round out the first quarter 21-13.

Sharks began to bite into the lead in the second quarter, outscoring Rocks 18-13. Rocks struggled to continue the momentum from the first quarter and Sheffield were able to narrow the gap to 31-34 as both teams went back to the locker room at halftime.

The lead would continue to slip away from the Rocks in the third as Sheffield would outscore them once again, eventually taking the lead with 4:30 to play. A few shots in the paint by Bo Zeigler would allow Rocks to reclaim a narrow 49-51 lead as they headed into the final quarter.

Rocks struck out to a 5-point lead but could not keep it after Mackey Mcknight scored 4 consecutive points to bring the home team back within 3. Martins then scored 4 straight points of his own, giving Sharks the 63-62 lead once again. Bo Zeigler would then get fouled and would go onto score one free throw to tie the game at 63-63 with 1 minute left.

On the final play for the home team, Shark’s Chris Alexander was fouled with 3 seconds to go, sending him to the free throw line where he knocked down two free throws to put the score to 65-63 with 3 seconds left. On the following play, Rocks couldn’t get the shot to fall and they came away with their first loss in 7 games.

Bo Zeigler was the team’s highest scorer with 18 points with Kieron Achara also adding 15 of his own.

Rocks are back this Sunday when they take on Bristol Flyers at home. With the head-to-head up for grabs it will not be a game you’ll want to miss!
